Vasa Museum
Sweden's most visited museum displays the almost completely intact royal warship Vasa, which sank on its maiden voyage in 1628. A masterpiece of maritime conservation.
It is a good idea to book tickets in advance at www.vasamuseet.se.
To avoid the biggest queues in summer it is recommended to arrive 08:30–09:30 (right when the museum opens during the summer) or after about 15:30, when the number of visitors often decreases.
Moderna Museet
Sweden's leading museum of modern and contemporary art with one of Europe's foremost collections. Here you can see works by world-famous artists such as Picasso, Dalí, Matisse and Kandinsky, alongside Swedish pioneers like Hilma af Klint. In addition to the permanent collection, the museum offers international temporary exhibitions, guided tours, a well-regarded restaurant and a beautiful location on Skeppsholmen with views over Stockholm. Skansen
The world's oldest open-air museum (founded in 1891) and one of Stockholm's most beloved attractions. Here both adults and children can experience Swedish history through more than 150 historic buildings from across the country, actors in period clothing showing how people lived in the past, traditional crafts, a working glassblowing workshop, bakery and crispbread baking. There are also Nordic animals in natural environments as well as Lill-Skansen, where children can get close to farm animals and join activities. Throughout the year Swedish traditions such as Midsummer, Walpurgis and Christmas are celebrated in a way that attracts visitors from all over the world. Fotografiska
One of the world's leading museums of photography and contemporary art, located in a beautiful former customs building at Stadsgården. New exhibitions featuring some of the world's most prominent photographers and contemporary artists are shown year-round. The museum is within easy walking distance from Gamla Stan and Slussen and also offers an award-winning restaurant and café with one of Stockholm's most beautiful panoramic views over Gamla Stan, Djurgården and the entrance to Stockholm.
