Archipelago

More than 30,000 islands

Stockholm's archipelago consists of around 30,000 islands, islets and skerries and is one of the world's largest and most spectacular archipelagos. Here you will find cliff swimming, sandy beaches, crystal clear water, red boathouses and cottages, picturesque guest harbours and untouched nature — perfect for swimming, boat trips, kayaking, hiking or a relaxing day in the Swedish archipelago.

If the weather is great and you want a little less culture and a little more archipelago, choose a boat trip to Fjäderholmarna, Stockholm's closest archipelago island and a perfect half-day destination — the boat takes about 25 minutes from Gamla Stan (Skeppsbron) or 30 minutes from Nybrokajen. Here you will find genuine archipelago atmosphere with craft shops, art galleries, a glass-blowing studio, cosy restaurants, cafés and beautiful waterside walks — one of our absolute favourite trips in Stockholm.

Trips in the Stockholm archipelago

The archipelago also offers a rich selection of restaurants, cafés and archipelago inns where you can enjoy fresh fish, seafood and Swedish summer classics with a sea view. Popular destinations are Vaxholm, the capital of the archipelago with its historic fortress; Sandhamn, known for sailing, sandy beaches and a lively summer and boating life; and Grinda, a car-free island with beautiful swimming coves, hiking trails, genuine archipelago nature and cosy restaurants. Another popular boat trip goes to Drottningholm Palace, one of Sweden's best preserved royal palaces and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The journey across Lake Mälaren is a sight in itself, combining beautiful nature with one of the country's foremost cultural and historical destinations.
